What an excellent monster I have for you this week! The Baby Storm Giant is just what it says on the tin: The infant child of a Storm Giant couple. Of course, that means it’s smaller than your typical Giant, but since Storm Giants are the largest fo the giants, that means their medium-sized babies are as large as an adult human! Their size, fussiness, and a lack of control of their powers combine into a challenge for seasoned adventurers everywhere.

What can they do?
While the baby has little in the way of hand-eye coordination, it is by no means helpless. Its Strength is still considerable, and when holding a rattle (really more like a club), or when given access to rocks, it can cause plenty of damage. More frighteningly, it has the ability to hurl bolts of lightning on a whim, though this pales in comparison to an adult Storm Giant.

They also have a smattering of the adult’s magical spells, mostly for survival. The baby can use its feather fall instinctively upon falling, and if it figures out how to use levitate, anything and anyone nearby becomes a toy, lifted off the ground at surprising moments.

The biggest danger to your party is going to be two-fold: When the baby cries, its wail is so loud that it can deafen those nearby should precautions not be taken. While babies can begin to cry for any reason, a true tantrum is much more frightening, as that is when the Baby Storm Giant is most likely to unknowingly use its Control Weather ability to bring about a storm!

How should I use them?
The best use of this monster is definitely not as an enemy. The Baby Storm Giant is a challenge in that it must be handled without allowing it to come to harm. One great use for the BSG is for a group that has a baby at the table, allowing you to keep immersed in the game even when the baby is messing with dice or being fussy.

Try some of these plot hooks.

• The baby has just lost its mother and needs to be brought by the party from one sea to another to be reunited with its father.
• The party is invited into the home of a storm giant, and during dinner is left alone with the baby.
• The baby was left on the doorstep of a humanoid orphanage.
• The storm giants are holding a birthday party for the baby- it is now 1 year old and has a general grasp on its powers.
• A highly-respected storm giant has been magically reverted to a baby!
• The baby’s parents desperately want a date-night, and will give the party what they want if they can care for it for one night.

Giving powerful abilities to a fairly-unintelligent, capricious creature is a recipe for disaster- or fun, depending on your party. There are many possibilities, whether you go for the escort-quest or some other situation. I’ll leave you with this quote from a zefrank song:
