The vanguard can activate the dark blood in it’s body, allowing it an extra action or bonus action on it’s turn. Once the action is completed, the vanguard takes 5 (2d4) poison damage from the blood’s corruptive nature. The vanguard can’t use this ability again until it has completed a short or long rest.

Innate Spellcasting. The vanquished vanguard's innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 11, +3 to hit with spell attacks). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 2 (1d4) lightning damage. or 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.

Reactions

Dark Counter. When the vanguard is hit with a melee attack, it can use its reaction to make an attack of opportunity against the creature that attacked it. When attacking this way, the Vanguard does not increase the damage of the attack by its mod.
